International Medical Recruitment: Bringing Global Talent to UAE Hospitals

Dubai Healthcare City has boosted the growth of healthcare institutions in the UAE. The healthcare city has laid the foundation for medical tourism in the UAE and attracts worldwide patients. It thus becomes inevitable to provide world-class health services to the visiting patients.

As reported, the UAE contains 157 hospitals and 5369 healthcare centres. Most hospitals receive accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI), which ensures hospital standards and patient safety. Accreditation by JCI is equivalent to a hospital providing high-quality healthcare services.

This article aims to highlight the topic of bringing global talent to UAE hospitals.

1. Why Global Talent?

The healthcare industry in the UAE is booming owing to its progressive national healthcare goals. The country is witnessing a steady rise in the need for healthcare professionals for a substantial period.

Since the inception of Dubai Healthcare City, the country has experienced a massive influx of global patients. The situation has indirectly warranted the demand for healthcare professionals to cater to worldwide patients. Gulfbusiness.com reports a drastic growth in medical tourism in 2022, with 6,74,000 medical tourists visiting the UAE.

The UAE falls short of local healthcare professionals and hence has to look to import global talent for medical recruitment. International medical recruitment offers several benefits to the healthcare industry in the UAE.

International Medical Recruitment

2. Benefits Of International Medical Recruitment

International Medical recruitment comes with diverse skills and expertise. These healthcare professionals perfectly match the overgrowing demands put forward by global patients.

In addition, international recruitment offers multilingual abilities and cultural competency, which can prove friendly to patients. It develops a warmness between the patient and the healthcare professional, which is crucial in critical situations.

Moreover, healthcare professionals from different backgrounds follow innovative and best global healthcare practices.

International Medical Recruitment

3. How To Recruit International Talent

A healthcare company can either deploy its HR department for the task. However, the best way is to involve a recruiting agency with expertise in hiring healthcare professionals.

The agency’s core job is to deal with global talent. They have earned the skills and the judgemental attitude to identify the appropriate candidate. Moreover, they are experts in assessing the candidates and auditing their qualifications and professional skills.

Salary negotiations, cultural assimilation, and onboarding the candidates are some tasks the agency undertakes on behalf of the healthcare company.

An agency is also well-versed in legal and regulatory compliance, which saves hundreds of thousands of hours for the healthcare company. It guides the candidates and helps them acquire the required license to provide healthcare services in the UAE.

4. Challenges And Solutions

Licensing and Certification: UAE has different licensing standards, comprising cumbersome processes involving rigorous documentation and verification procedures.

Visa and Immigration Regulations: Understanding specific visa requirements for healthcare professionals can be challenging. While changes in immigration policies may impact recruitment,

Language barrier: Though English is spoken broadly in the UAE, language barriers still exist when treating diverse patients and communicating with colleagues. A few candidates may have to learn the Arabic language if required.

Cultural Adaption: International professionals might struggle to adapt to a new culture. It might be mandatory to provide cultural sensitivity training and the appropriate resources to help them adjust to the routine of life in the UAE.

Recruitment Costs: Global talent comes at a high price. Healthcare companies bear the cost of visas, relocation, licensing, housing, and other miscellaneous expenses for the candidate.

Retention and Burnout: International healthcare professionals may stress out while adjusting to the new environment and become homesick. Retaining these personnel can be challenging for the healthcare administration.

Cultural and Religious Sensitivity: The UAE is a culturally sensitive environment. International professionals may lack awareness or sensitivity towards this environment, resulting in misunderstandings and conflicts.

Geopolitical and Security Concerns: Political and security situations in the candidate’s home countries may have an adverse effect while working in the UAE. Hospitals must be conscious of these elements and modify their hiring practices accordingly.

The best option to overcome the above challenges is to engage a recruitment agency expert in hiring medical professionals. It offers several benefits, which are listed in brief as follows:

  • Access to a Global Talent Pool
  • Expertise in Healthcare Staffing
  • Efficient and Timely Hiring
  • Customised Candidate Selection
  • Compliance and Documentation
  • Cost Efficiency
  • Candidate Assessment and Screening
  • Cultural Integration Support
  • Confidentiality
  • Market Insights
  • Ongoing Support
  • Risk Mitigation

Challenges and Solutions

Conclusion

The UAE’s healthcare industry is booming, and the demand for healthcare professionals is continuously rising. The local talent falls short of filling the demand-supply gap, and therefore, the UAE looks forward to recruiting international professionals.

However, hiring international professionals poses several challenges. It’s best to hire a recruitment agency and outsource all the recruitment worries to them to overcome these challenges and also to find best job opportunities at Abu Dhabi.

Jobs are plenty and it is a lucrative market for professionals desiring career growth in different fields and disciplines

Why should medical professionals work in the UAE in 2023

A Booming Medical Industry

There are several factors contributing to the growth of the medical sector in the UAE. These factors are: the increasing population, the rising demand for quality health care, the government’s support and investment, and the development of medical tourism.

According to a report by Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, UAE’s healthcare sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 7.5% over the next five years. The report states that by 2025, the industry is expected to reach an overall valuation of $10.7 billion.

A report by Alpen Capital also states that the UAE has the highest number of hospitals per capita in the GCC region, and ranks among the top 20 countries in the world in terms of health care spending per capita.

Many international patients are choosing UAE because of its advanced medical facilities, skilled professionals, and competitive prices. Top Medical Specialties In UAE

Medical specialties are branches of medical practice that focus on a specific group of patients, diseases, skills, or philosophy.

For example, paediatrics deals with children, oncology with cancer, pathology with laboratory medicine, and family medicine with primary care.

A paediatrician deals with children, oncologist studies cancer and pathologist research on laboratory medicine. Medical Specialists develop expertise in a particular area. This is important because it allows doctors to develop expertise and provide better care for their patients.

The Association of American Medical Colleges recognizes more than 160 specialties and subspecialties in the medical field. This presents a vast opportunity for aspiring doctors to choose an area that suits their interest and where their contributions can have the most impact.

In UAE, when applying for a medical licence, healthcare experience as a general practitioner is considered in seven medical disciplines: Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paediatrics.

This clearly indicates the most important and popular medical specialties recognized by the Health Ministry in UAE.

The above listed medical specialties are in high demand for three key reasons. First, the population is ageing and requires more complex and specialised care.

Second, new opportunities and challenges are created as new advances in medical technology take place. Specialisation is needed to understand these challenges and opportunities.

Third, widespread shortage of medical experts creates a competitive edge for specialised doctors.

The healthcare profession is a dynamic landscape, however. Medical specialties are constantly evolving and expanding as new knowledge and technologies emerge in the field of medicine. Individuals must keep their interest and aptitude in mind while choosing which medical area to specialise in.

UAE’s New Visa Reforms; How Will They Affect The Job Market And Why Now?

Covid-19 has done irreparable damage both, in our personal lives, and to the world’s economy. It forced us to lock ourselves inside our homes for more than two years which led to the shutting down of economies across the world. Apart from the mental stress of being locked into your homes, people had to deal with additional stress of losing their jobs.

For frontline workers, the situation seemed to be even more serious especially for the medical professionals who saw an increase in their demands, according to data published in OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). This meant longer working hours, more patients to deal with and an unimaginable emotional toll of watching so many people lose their lives.

It isn’t surprising then, that many nurses saw a desire to leave the profession altogether. According to McKinsey research, more than 32% of the surveyed registered nurses expressed a desire to leave their direct patient care roles. The research further elaborated on factors acting as the main driving force behind this decision. Insufficient staffing levels, inadequate compensation, a lack of support in the workplace and the emotional toil of the job are some of the major ones.

Check out our previous blog to learn more about nursing staff shortages and how it negatively impacts both patients and nurses!

Evidently, the pandemic crisis has led to extreme levels of burnout among medical employees. Combined with blockages in existing supply pipelines of nursing staff, this has exacerbated the nursing staff shortages.

These shortages have been felt worldwide. And unfortunately, the Middle East has not been able to escape the impact of it.

Thus, taking a proactive approach to address the issue of nursing shortages, UAE has enacted new visa reforms to attract more skilled professionals, especially in the healthcare industry, to their job market. These reforms are specifically aimed at filling the vast pool of job opportunities that exist in the UAE.

Green Visa

Green Visa, announced back in September 2021, allows the holder to sponsor himself (previously, it was the employer or host that had to sponsor the holder) to work inside UAE for 5 years. The holder can also sponsor his family members that includes spouse, sons till the age of 25, and unmarried daughters, regardless of their age. The list also includes “children of determination” meaning children with disabilities or special needs.

Skilled workers, Freelancers and Self-employed persons are eligible for this visa.

To be qualified as a skilled worker, the worker must hold a valid employment contract and should be classified in the first, second or third occupational level as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The individual must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and have a salary of more than AED 15,000.

Green visa

Golden Visa

Amendments to the Golden Visa have made it much more flexible and expansive.

Now, a golden visa holder can sponsor himself for 10 years to work, live or own property inside UAE. The individual can sponsor his family including his spouse and children with no age restrictions, unlike Green Visa. Additionally, any number of domestic labourers can be also sponsored.

Investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents, scientists and professionals, outstanding students and graduates, humanitarian pioneers and frontline heroes are the people that UAE is hoping to attract with these new amendments.

Amendments have introduced expansions in the category of skilled workers which now includes professionals in the field of medicine. UAE wants to attract highly skilled medical professionals through its golden visa amendments. Thus, an atmosphere of opportunity and growth exists in UAE for all medical professionals.

The medical professional looking to apply for the visa must fulfil some basic requirements, i.e., holding a valid employment contract and classified in the first or second occupational level of Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation classification.

Golden visa also allows family members to hold residency till the time of its expiration in case of original holder’s death.

Golden Visa

Job Exploration Visa

Job Exploration Visa is aimed to attract job seekers and fresh graduates from world-renowned top universities to look for career opportunities in UAE. The individual can sponsor himself without requiring a host. They must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

All those classified in the first, second or third skill level as per the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and graduates from world’s top 500 universities are eligible for the job exploration visa.

How Fast Track Solutions is leading the charge in creating employment opportunities for medical professionals in the UAE?

FTS is a healthcare employee recruitment agency which has been instrumental in connecting highly skilled professionals with more than 300 medical institutions across 4 continents.

We are aware of the COVID induced crisis of nursing staff shortages. Therefore, we have partnered with hospitals in countries like UAE, Taiwan, Kenya, Mexico, India etc. to help combat these challenges.

Especially in the UAE, we conduct regular recruitment drives for nurses from across the country. These drives take place in Dubai and Abi Dhabi which have become, not only national, but global centres of opportunity and business.

As demonstrated in our previous blog, a higher patient to nurse ratio adversely impacts both patients and nurses. Thus, it is our aim to lower this ratio as much as possible, especially in countries where healthcare systems are not able to fill the gaps.

If your institution is struggling to find competent nurses, then look no further than FTS. Visit our website to get in touch with us today.

Doctors from the UK are always in high demand in the UAE due to the training they receive and the advanced techniques they use to enhance patient care.

The growing healthcare sector of the UAE has paved the way for doctors from developed countries such as the UK to map out a career path in the UAE.

Let’s understand what makes the UAE an excellent career destination for UK doctors, how they can be a part of its healthcare sector and explore more career-related opportunities.

A Brief History

The UK and UAE share a deep strategic bond as nations with historical relations. Established on December 2, 1971, the UAE and UK formalized their bilateral association with the Treaty of Friendship, aiming to strengthen their bonds further based on mutual respect for sovereignty and mutual interest.

A report shows that more than 120,000 British citizens live in the UAE. The data reflects how the UAE has garnered the attention of Britishers, who now see it as a great place to relocate, live and work.

However, licensing is crucial to begin with, and become a part of the UAE healthcare system.

Let’s understand the licensing requirements for UK doctors.

About Licensing

The UAE licensing procedures differ from emirate to emirate. Medical professionals who look to practice in the city of Dubai or anywhere in the UAE are required to acquire a license to practice from the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi (HAAD).
